Ingredients

  • 1 tsp matcha powder culinary or ceremonial grade
  • 2 tsp hot water not boiling, about 175°F / 80°C
  • 3/4 cup cold milk dairy, oat, almond, or soy work well
  • 1-2 tsp maple syrup or sugar (to taste)
  • Ice cubes
  • A pinch of vanilla extract or cinnamon for extra flavor optional

Instructions

  • Sift the matcha into a small bowl to remove clumps.
  • Add hot water and whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion until frothy. (Use a bamboo whisk or small milk frother.)
  • Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour in cold milk
  • Stir in your sweetener of choice.
  • Gently pour the whisked matcha over the back of a spoon or down the side of the glass.
  • Top with a sprinkle of matcha powder or cinnamon (optional).

Notes

  • Keep your milk cold and dense.
  • Add milk foam on top for a better-looking drink.
  • Use plant-based milk for a dairy-free or vegan option.
  • Adjust sweetness to your taste, matcha has a naturally earthy, slightly bitter flavor.
