Ingredients

  • 4 cups (500g) whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¾ cups (420ml) buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a cast-iron skillet.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually pour in the buttermilk and stir until a soft dough forms. If needed, add a little extra buttermilk for moisture.
  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead for about 30 seconds, just until it comes together. Shape it into a round loaf.
  • Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet or skillet. Use a sharp knife to cut a deep cross (X) on top.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and a tap on the bottom sounds hollow.
  • Let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing. Enjoy warm with butter!
