Ingredients

  • 3 lbs apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar adjust to taste
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar optional
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract optional

Instructions

Slow Cooker Method (Recommended for ease)

  • Add all ingredients to your slow cooker. Stir to coat apples evenly.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours or until apples are soft and deep brown.
  • Use an immersion blender (or transfer to a blender) and puree until smooth.
  • Leave the lid ajar and cook for another 30–60 minutes if you want it thicker.
  • Let cool, then store in jars in the refrigerator (up to 2 weeks) or freezer (up to 6 months).

Stovetop Method

  • Combine all ingredients in a heavy pot over medium heat.
  • Cover and cook, stirring often, until apples are soft (about 45 minutes).
  • Puree until smooth, return to pot, and simmer uncovered for another 30–45 minutes, stirring frequently, until thickened.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples (e.g., Fuji + Granny Smith) for balanced flavor.
  • No need for pectin. The natural sugars and long cooking create a perfect spreadable texture.
  • This recipe is naturally gluten-free and vegan.
